Spring is Here and Everything is on SALE!

Could it be true? Did we finally break the back of Winter, probably not. It will probably snow or something on Monday, Winter's way of sticking it's tongue out at us :0)

My kiddos and I love this song from The Learning Station. Although, fair warning, it gets stuck in our heads and then ends up being sung ALL day long!

Here are the activities and skills that are included...

We Spring for Words-CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.¹ (This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)

In the Spring -RF.K.1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. RF.K.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RL.K.10. Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.

Do the Bunny Hop-CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2b Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.

Beautiful Printing-CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.1a Print many upper- and lowercase letters.

Spring Counts-CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

Flyin’ High with Place Value-K.NBT.1. Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (such as 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.

For the Birds-CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.C.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.¹

Little Addition Showers-K.OA.5. Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Missing Tweets-CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

Rainy Day Measurement-CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.

Tomorrow is my last day of Spring Break. I'm sure it's more than a little strange that I am excited to get back to my little Hoppers! Have a wonderful Easter!

Spring?

When I closed my eyes and imagined Spring Break, I did not see cold and snow playing a part of my dream. No, this is not what I had imagined at all. I guess it's like the saying...You get what you get, and you don't get upset!

This Spring Break so far is a bust! The weather outside is frightful, I am desperately trying to find a small house to buy, and I am attempting to pack up 13 years of stuff. <sniff, sniff> I am keeping my head held high and picturing a new life for the little mister and I.

I miss blogging! I miss just creating stuff and giving it away. I do. I miss the interaction with all of you! I keep thinking things will change and that I will go back to what I use to be, but realistically, I don't see that happening anytime soon. I am a completely different person that what I was a year ago. To be honest, I am a better person now after everything that has happened. I am a better Mommy. I am a better teacher. I am way more empathetic and understanding than I was...so that's a plus. But, I do miss all of you! I wish I had more time to devote :0)

Hey Peepsters

Spoiler Alert: This post is all over the place....

It's Tuesday, Coop-a-Loop is taking his AM nap and I'm sitting here staring at this bowl...

Those are Peepsters. Have you tried them? They are de*light*ful. It's 9:30AM, you cannot eat candy before noon....nomnomnomnomnommmmmmm. The crazy thing is I HATE Peeps, but those little treasures get me every year!

Today I will be trotting over to the Dollar Tree in search of cute plastic eggs...thanks Fran! I have been searching my podunk town for cute ones for a couple of weeks. I've been to Target, Walmart, KMart, and the Dollar General and all I came up with were Hello Kitty and Camouflage Eggs....what am I suppose to do with those?

I should just PJ it up today. I am thoroughly exhausted. Have I mentioned that my little ball of sunshine is almost four months and still wakes every 3 hours to alert the masses that he is starving? I love the little bugger, but when, oh when, will he sleep through the night? And yesterday, was the first day back after Spring Break and the kiddos acted like they were at home, taking their shoes off, sitting on tables, and walking around chatting during work time....I came back home comatose.

I told you I was going to be all over the place (stay with me). The other day I got the cutest Subtraction book from Marlana at Lil' Country Kindergarten. I LOVE it! She is selling it on her TPT for $1.25. Make like a bunny and hop over there to see it :0)

Oh and here is my first Currently...I have been living in a cave...a cave in the middle of a cornfield, but a cave nonetheless. Join the party with Farley here...

 

I needed some Wake Up Work for my lesson plan this week and realized that I haven't given the Hoppers a sight word color by code in a loooong time. They love doing them, but I am torn, I have the kids that scribble the colors as fast as they can and in the other camp....the kids that are so meticulous that it takes them days to finish! Anywho, thought I would share it with you (the mistake on there has been fixed...I still don't know my color words, lol)! Thanks for all the kind words, love to all!

Spring Hoppenings

Spring is here or at least it is according to the calendar, right. Things here in the South Subs of Chicago during the early to mid part of Spring is....well, not the prettiest time of year. When you see pictures and books of Spring, you get this idyllic version of Spring....green grass, small buds on the trees, light jackets, breezy, sunny days for flying kites, and baby birds chirping. Now let me describe what is actually happening; the grass is far from green and is pretty much sopping wet, the trees are bare until May-ish, one day it is 65, but it is cloudy or rainy and super windy, the next is 35 with blinding sun. Last year on the first day of Spring, my husband took me to Hot Dougs. A somewhat famous hot dog place. We waited in line outside for over an hour...it was snowing. The day before was warm and beautiful. Spring in Chicago.


Well, the way I present Spring in my classroom is the idyllic version, no point in making my classroom all brown, wet, and cold. :) I shall attempt to be optimistic...Spring will make an appearance sometime in mid April.

I have a few students who just aren't ready for adding yet, and I really need to work on developing activities that give them that sense of accomplishment. If you scroll further down...you will see the adding ones with a few different levels.

Rainy Day Subtraction

I buy these cute Bunny Mallows in the Spring. We sort and graph them. I give students a Ziploc Sandwich baggie and let them go to town. The fun part of course is they get to snack on them when they are done :-)

You can do several things with the What Comes Next Worksheet to offer different levels of differentiation. Here are some options...have students use traditional dice (depending on students level...give 1, 2, or 3 dice), have students use double dice, students can use any of those crazy dice that can have up to 20 sides, or you can make number word dice....OR for the very students who just beg for the challenge...
give them two dice with the actual numbers on them and add them together or give them one dice with numbers on it (one that has between 10-20 sides) and one traditional dice with dots and have them practice counting up.
