Poetry Journals: Making them Matter (April Edition)

It's hard to believe that April is just around the corner, isn't it? My Spring Break is here, which should be a woohoo; however, last week we did a fertility treatment and now I am in the dreaded 2 week wait. I am not kidding when I tell you...the last two days I have Googled every single "what if" that has crossed my mind, I read the book Water for Elephants (which I HIGHLY recommend), and I've completely organized our office and spare bedroom, as well as, all of my teaching resources. I have even cataloged all my Teacher's Helpers and Mailbox Magazines by theme/month and year. Keeping my mind busy :-) is the key to making it through the 2ww. I need to thank EVERYONE that has left me comments and emailed me about their own fertility experiences, it helps to hear about all the success stories out there!

Back to Kindergarten now...I am toying with the idea of submitting a proposal for the IL Pre-K and K Conference. The title...Poetry Journals: Making them Matter. I would include the journals, maybe have a make and take with a Poster, and give tips and activities that you can do. Any thoughts??? I need input and a spoonful of courage!

Today you are going to see the April Edition is a bit of a mess. The themes I have are; Farm, Earth Day, Rain, and Bunnies. Well, in the past I have lost a bit of focus toward the end of the year with our Journals, so I am redoing them. So, I do not have posters and some of the old journals I am not going to use next year because of length. I was really trying to keep all the posts similar but it's a little difficult. My apologies if you aren't able to find what you need or want.

I hope you enjoy!
Shannon

  5. Thank you so much for your April poems! I love your poetry folder posts and have looked forward to them each month since I found your blog in February. I have never done poetry folders, but I have sent a couple of your new versions home as homework. The kids love them! When you use these next year will you have the kids illustrate in school and then do the homework activity/illustration in addition to what they did in class? I have only had time to send them home so far and they don't come back with the best pictures, so I am just curious what your thoughts are. One more question...where did you get the cute box borders you put on your new versions for the illustration to go in? They make the whole page so adorable!

I think a poetry folders session at the conference would be great. I love make and takes!! I haven't been able to go to a kindergarten conference in so long, but when I was able to go I loved coming back to school with ideas and activities I can use right away. If you end up presenting you will have to post the information, I would love to go to your session! Thanks again for sharing!! :)

  6. Good afternoon.. I LOVE your blog and love following it. You have such great ideas. I am just wondering if you could post your daily schedule. A co-teacher and I are trying to "re-do" our schedules to best benefit the children. Thanks!!

  8. Hi Harley,

My schedule is posted. If you go to the post titled "Schedule and the Possible Lack There Of" you will find it.

It's not a traditional schedule because we have so many specials, so it is my lesson plan template but everything is there.

    Hope that helps!

  9. Hi Kari,

I am so glad that you are using the Poetry Journals! To answer your questions...
*The border clipart is from DJinkers. I get some of them from their "Borders" CD and some from "Kiddilywinks".
*Next year I will have the students illustrate the poems in class. We do a fine motor program called Project 64, and I am hoping to somehow incorporate it into the folders; however, I haven't quite pieced it all together yet :). Students will complete the homework at home.

    Hope this helps!!

  10. Just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the wonderful stuff you post on your blog! I think you should definitely put a proposal in. If I lived in IL, it would be one of the first ones I signed up for!

    Good Luck!

  11. Thanks so much for your poems!! I am so excited to use them this year in my classroom. I didn't see any homework for Little Bunny Foo Foo. Do you not do homework for this one?

  12. Hi Suzy_vo,
I am not using Little Bunny Foo Foo as part of our poetry journals this year. It's just too long :) We will still sing it, it just won't be a poem.
